Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about OM System M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F 1 8 II

  • Extremely compact and lightweight (120g), ideal for travel and daily carry
  • Excellent sharpness from center to edge, even at wide aperture (f/1.8)
  • Durable metal construction
  • Addition of weather sealing for better durability in harsh conditions
  • Quick and efficient autofocus suitable for street photography and video
  • Includes updated ZERO anti-reflective coating to reduce ghosting

What we don't like about OM System M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F 1 8 II

  • Loss of the manual focus clutch mechanism found on the Mark I version
  • Optical design is identical to the predecessor, offering no sharpness improvements
  • Higher price point compared to the original version
  • Not suitable for users who prefer manual zone focusing for street photography

Verdict

The OM System M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II is a compact, wide-angle prime lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras, providing a versatile 34mm full-frame equivalent focal length. Its optical design consists of 9 elements in 6 groups, including one DSA, one HR, and two aspherical elements, all protected by a robust, all-metal barrel that now features IPX1-rated weather sealing. Main advantages include its ultra-lightweight 112g build, a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for low-light performance, and a fast, silent Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system. However, this second-generation update removed the physical manual focus clutch and distance scale found on the original version, and some users may find its edge sharpness slightly lower compared to Pro-series alternatives.
