What we like about Sigma 17mm F 4 DG DN C

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, ideal for travel and vlogging
  • Premium all-metal build quality with a tactile aperture ring
  • Excellent sharpness across the entire frame, even when shot wide open at f/4
  • Impressive minimum focusing distance of 12cm for close-up photography
  • Fast, accurate, and near-silent autofocus performance
  • Effective flare resistance and good contrast in bright lighting

What we don't like about Sigma 17mm F 4 DG DN C

  • Relatively slow f/4 maximum aperture limits low-light use and background blur
  • Significant barrel distortion and vignetting in RAW files that require software correction
  • Weather sealing is limited only to a rubber gasket at the mount
  • Lack of optical image stabilization (relies on in-body stabilization)
  • Some visible focus breathing and longitudinal chromatic aberration in certain conditions

Verdict

The Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary is an ultra-compact, full-frame prime lens for Sony E and Leica L-mount systems, featuring a high-quality all-metal construction and a lightweight profile of approximately 220–225g. It offers an expansive 103.7-degree field of view with an optical design of 9 elements in 8 groups, including two SLD and three aspherical elements to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness from its maximum f/4 aperture down to f/22. Main pros include a remarkably short minimum focusing distance of 12cm for a 1:3.6 magnification ratio, snappy and silent autofocus via a stepping motor, and a dedicated tactile aperture ring. However, its small f/4 aperture limits low-light and astrophotography performance, and the lens relies heavily on software corrections to manage significant native barrel distortion and vignetting.
