Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70 300mm F4 5 6 3G ED

  • Extremely lightweight and compact for a telephoto zoom (approx. 400g)
  • Very fast and quiet autofocus, ideal for video and action (AFP pulse motor)
  • Excellent sharpness, particularly for the price point, even at 300mm
  • Effective Vibration Reduction (VR) allows for handheld shots at slow shutter speeds
  • Affordable, offering great value for money

What we don't like about Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70 300mm F4 5 6 3G ED

  • No physical switches for VR or AF/MF, requiring menu adjustments on some cameras
  • Not compatible with older or non-updated Nikon DSLR bodies
  • Maximum aperture is slow (f/6.3 at 300mm), limiting low-light performance
  • Does not include a lens hood (often sold separately)
  • Corners can be slightly softer at the maximum focal length

Verdict

The Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED is a lightweight telephoto zoom lens designed for DX-format DSLRs, offering a versatile 4.3x zoom range equivalent to 105–450mm on a full-frame sensor. It features an advanced AF-P pulse (stepping) motor for nearly silent and rapid autofocus, a 7-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth bokeh, and a minimum focus distance of 1.1 metres. Key advantages include its ultra-portable 400g design, impressive sharpness even at the 300mm reach, and ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass that effectively minimises chromatic aberration. However, notable drawbacks include its all-plastic construction and mount, a relatively dim f/6.3 maximum aperture at the telephoto end, and compatibility issues with many older Nikon DSLR models.
