What we like about Canon EF-S 55 250mm F 4 5 6 IS STM

  • Excellent value for money as a budget telephoto option
  • Near-silent STM (Stepping Motor) autofocus, ideal for video recording
  • Lightweight and compact design making it easy to carry for travel
  • Effective image stabilization (IS) providing up to 3.5 stops of shake correction
  • High optical sharpness in the center, outperforming its price point
  • Non-rotating front element which is beneficial when using polarizing filters

What we don't like about Canon EF-S 55 250mm F 4 5 6 IS STM

  • Slow maximum aperture (f/4-5.6) limiting performance in low-light conditions
  • Plastic lens mount which is less durable than metal alternatives
  • Manual focus ring lacks tactile feedback and can feel somewhat loose
  • Slight softness in image corners, particularly at the 250mm telephoto end
  • Visible vignetting and chromatic aberration when shooting wide open
  • Requires the camera to be powered on to adjust focus due to focus-by-wire STM

Verdict

The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is a compact telephoto zoom lens designed for APS-C sensor cameras, providing a 35mm equivalent focal range of 88-400mm. It features a sophisticated optical construction of 15 elements in 12 groups, including one Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) element to minimize chromatic aberration, and a 7-blade circular aperture for smooth background blur. Key performance advantages include its Stepping Motor (STM) for near-silent, smooth autofocus ideal for video, and an optical Image Stabilizer that offers up to 3.5 stops of shake correction. Its lightweight 375g build and non-rotating front element make it highly portable and filter-friendly. However, notable drawbacks include its all-plastic construction and lens mount, a relatively slow variable maximum aperture of f/4-5.6 that limits low-light performance, and the fact that it is not compatible with full-frame DSLR bodies.
