OCLU Action Camera Review | 96 Data compared

The Oclu 4K action camera, a debut product from a Scottsdale, Arizona startup, is a robust and aerodynamic device that competes directly with entry-level options like the GoPro Hero 7 Silver at a $299 price point. Designed horizontally to mount easily on handle bars, it captures sharp 4K video at 30 fps, 1080p at 120 fps for slow motion, and uses a vertical compression similar to GoPro's Superview to create a fast-paced feel. A unique standalone feature is its "LiveCut" recording mode, which allows users to instantly delete uninteresting previous footage on the fly to save space. Additionally, it boasts excellent 12-megapixel still photos paired with a sharp f/2.5-aperture lens, a dual-screen design with a top full-color display, and wide compatibility with standard GoPro gear through an extensive lineup of compact mounts. Despite these notable strengths, the camera exhibits several distinct limitations in performance and hardware. Most notably, its electronic image stabilization is limited to 1080p and fails to match the smooth, gimbal-like performance of competitors like DJI's Rocksteady or GoPro's Hypersmooth. The camera's dynamic range also struggles, resulting in...

The OCLU action camera stands out in the market due to its organic, aerodynamic, low-profile body design that features a tripod thread on the bottom and a unique top-facing LCD viewfinder. The reviewer was highly impressed by its excellent image and video quality, noting great sharpness, balanced exposure, and strong low-light capabilities. Key advantages include its IPX7 water-resistant body, a convenient "OcSnap" magnetic charging/data cable, and an innovative "Live Cut" on-the-fly editing feature that lets users instantly delete unwanted footage while recording to save memory space. Additionally, the camera is equipped with three independent microphones that allow customizable audio settings (Stereo, Top, or Front), and it features a handy "One Touch Record" mode for automatic startup filming. Despite its strong points, the reviewer highlighted several drawbacks and areas for improvement. A major source of frustration was the "One Touch Record" behavior in photo mode, which would immediately snap a picture and shut the camera down, making it temporarily impossible to connect to the companion mobile app. The OCLU app itself is limited as it only operates in portrait mode and...

The OCLU Action Camera is a compact, sleekly designed device priced at $299 (often found for $199) that offers simple three-button operation, making it exceptionally easy to use even when wearing thick winter mittens. Designed with outdoor sports in mind, it features dual screens—a top-facing screen for framing shots and a front-facing information display—and is water-resistant up to 1 metre for 30 minutes without requiring an external case. Performance pros include sharp 12MP photos with highly adjustable shutter speeds, a helpful companion mobile app, and a convenient magnetic OcSnap charging cable that allows for charging during recording without opening the camera chassis. Furthermore, its unique LiveCut® feature stands out by letting riders instantly discard a failed trick or mistake mid-recording, effectively saving valuable memory card space and streamlining the post-editing process. However, the reviewer identified several notable limitations regarding resolution compatibility and hardware focus. Although the camera captures high-quality video, shooting in maximum 4K resolution restricts user customisation; core features like Electronic Image Stabilization, 4x slow motion (120 FPS), and Superview framing all require stepping down the resolution to 2.7K...

The OCLU 4K Action Camera is a well-designed, water-resistant shooter that captures impressive 12MP stills and sharp 4K video at 30p for its budget-friendly price point. It stands out with a sleek, award-winning minimalist aesthetic and arrives bundled with a plentiful variety of outdoor accessories, including a chest harness, a handlebar mount, and an underwater shell. The physical build features a durable design and a crisp, top-mounted LCD screen, while the software includes a handy "Livecut" feature designed to let users delete unwanted recordings on the fly to save storage space. However, the camera is severely held back by an awful user experience, buggy firmware, and terrible connectivity options. On the downside, the companion mobile app barely functions, the electronic image stabilization fails completely in Full HD mode to produce heavily distorted footage, and the battery life drains rapidly—especially when attempting to use Wi-Fi. Furthermore, the physical screen placement on top of the device makes framing shots incredibly awkward unless shooting from the waist. Compounding these frustrations, the camera completely fails to connect to computers via USB, suffers from a...

The T3 review of the OCLU action camera highlights it as a uniquely designed, budget-friendly competitor to GoPro, featuring an unconventional wide, low-profile metal body with a rubberised finish. Key pros include its standout LiveCut mode, which lets users delete failed footage on-the-fly to save Micro-SD card space, and a top-mounted viewscreen that is ideal for checking shots when chest-mounted or attached to handlebars. Reviewers also praised its robust build quality, a convenient magnetic charging cable attachment, simple three-button operation, and impressive 4K/30FPS video depth and vibrancy that rivals older GoPros. However, the camera suffers from several prominent cons that hold it back from defeating top-tier competitors. Most notably, its electronic video stabilisation is only available at 1080P resolution, leaving 4K footage prone to camera shake. Additionally, using the camera's companion app over Wi-Fi causes severe battery drain. The top-mounted screen acts as a double-edged sword, becoming a major hindrance when trying to compose shots at standard eye level. Finally, its performance capping at 4K/30FPS lags behind rivals like the GoPro HERO 8, which achieves 4K at 60FPS.

The OCLU 4K Action Camera is a highly compact, low-profile device measuring 2.4 x 2.4 x 1.1 inches, making it stable and easy to mount under hat brims or onto standard GoPro accessories. It delivers crisp video resolution at 4K at 30 fps or 1080p at 120 fps, and includes 12-megapixel still photo capabilities. Notable pros include an IPX7 water-resistance rating (submersible up to 1 meter for 30 minutes), dual independently isolated microphones with automatic wind reduction for clear audio, and an Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) mode. Additionally, it offers a 2-inch top preview screen, a proprietary magnetic charging cable, a free smartphone app, and eight versatile recording modes—such as LiveCut for on-the-fly editing, motion record, loop recording, burst mode, and customizable time-lapse intervals.

The OCLU 4K is an innovative, budget-friendly action camera with a unique aerodynamic and low-profile design that serves as a subtle alternative to traditional, boxy GoPro models. Half the height of a GoPro, its compact and rubberized body fits easily in a pocket and is designed for easy operation with gloves on. It features a top-mounted full-color display screen, a front-facing LCD status screen, and an IPX7 water-resistance rating (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes) that can be extended to 50 meters with an optional housing case. Performance-wise, it shoots 4K video at 30 FPS, captures 12MP photos, and includes a standout "LiveCut" feature that lets users delete unwanted footage on the spot during playback to conserve valuable SD card storage space. A major advantage of this camera is its sleek, award-winning shape, which keeps it from getting knocked crooked during sports activity, alongside its convenient magnetic USB charger and highly customizable quick-toggle shooting modes. However, the review highlights several notable drawbacks, including lackluster low-light recording capabilities, poor audio quality, and a general video quality that falls short of...
