What we like about Ducky Origin Phantom Black

  • Classic ultra-thin bezel design that saves desk space and maintains a clean, minimalist aesthetic
  • High-quality PBT double-shot keycaps with durable, fade-resistant legends
  • Solid build quality featuring a dual-layer PCB and heavy, stable construction
  • Highly customizable with hot-swappable large/stabilized keys (ESC, Space Bar, Enter, etc.)
  • South-facing switch design ensures better compatibility with aftermarket keycap sets
  • Includes functional extras like 3-level adjustable feet and a detachable USB Type-C cable

What we don't like about Ducky Origin Phantom Black

  • Lock indicator LEDs (Caps Lock, Num Lock) are reported as being distractingly bright by default
  • Some users reported issues with the space bar feeling 'sticky' or needing to be reseated for better performance
  • Full-size 108-key layout may be too large for some users' desk setups compared to TKL or 60% variants
  • The heavy weight of Cherry MX Black switches (if chosen) may feel fatiguing for gaming compared to lighter linear switches
  • Narrow bezel design can make it difficult to use standard keycap pullers without straining the switch stems

Verdict

The Ducky Origin Phantom Black is a full-sized (108-key) mechanical keyboard that prioritizes an authentic, retro-inspired typing experience over gaming aesthetics. It features an ultra-thin bezel design, high-quality PBT double-shot keycaps, and a durable dual-layer PCB with a 1000 Hz polling rate and N-key rollover for stable performance. Main pros include a 'hot-swap' design that allows easy replacement of switches on larger keys (like Space and Enter), south-facing switches for broad keycap compatibility, and three-level adjustable feet for personalized ergonomics. However, the keyboard lacks any LED backlighting or RGB effects, and its full-sized footprint may be too large for those with limited desk space.
