Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Tokina atx-i 17 35mm F 4 FF

  • Excellent value for the price, often significantly cheaper than native brand alternatives
  • Robust build quality featuring weather-sealing and a moisture-resistant rubber gasket
  • High center sharpness even when shooting wide open at f/4
  • Minimal barrel distortion, making it suitable for architectural photography
  • Intuitive one-touch focus clutch mechanism for quick switching between AF and MF
  • Compact and lightweight design compared to other ultra-wide full-frame zooms

What we don't like about Tokina atx-i 17 35mm F 4 FF

  • Loud and somewhat dated autofocus motor noise
  • Softness in the extreme corners of the frame, especially at 17mm and 35mm focal lengths
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (purple fringing) in high-contrast corner areas when wide open
  • Lack of built-in image stabilization
  • Focus clutch mechanism prevents manual focus overrides while in AF mode

Verdict

The Tokina atx-i 17-35mm F4 FF is an ultra-wide angle zoom lens designed for full-frame DSLRs, featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture and an optical construction of 13 elements in 12 groups, including two Super-Low Dispersion elements and three aspherical glass elements. Its main characteristics include a 103.9-degree wide field of view, moisture-resistant sealing, and the signature One-Touch Focus Clutch for rapid AF/MF switching. Key pros include excellent center sharpness, minimal linear distortion ideal for architectural photography, and a compact, lightweight 600g build relative to its class. However, notable cons include soft corner performance at wider apertures, noticeable vignetting at 17mm, and a somewhat noisy autofocus motor.
