Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sony FE 50mm F2 8 Macro

  • Excellent edge-to-edge sharpness, particularly when stopped down
  • True 1:1 macro magnification ratio capabilities
  • Extremely compact and lightweight body design
  • Very low central chromatic aberration and great flare resistance
  • Handy physical controls including a focus limiter and focus-hold button
  • Dust and moisture-resistant construction quality
  • Affordable entry point compared to the premium 90mm macro alternative

What we don't like about Sony FE 50mm F2 8 Macro

  • Slow and noisy autofocus performance
  • Frequent autofocus hunting, especially in close-up scenarios
  • Very short working distance to subjects at full 1:1 magnification
  • Extremely slow fly-by-wire manual focus requiring multiple ring turns
  • Noticeable vignetting (corner shading) when shooting wide open at f/2.8
  • Lacks built-in optical image stabilization
  • External barrel extends significantly during close-up focusing

Verdict

The Sony FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro is a compact, lightweight full-frame prime lens weighing 236g, featuring a true 1:1 magnification ratio and a minimum focusing distance of 16cm. Its optical design includes 8 elements in 7 groups, with ED glass to minimize chromatic aberration and a 7-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh. Main characteristics include a dust- and moisture-resistant build, a dedicated focus-hold button, and a focus-range limiter to improve efficiency. Pros include exceptional corner-to-corner sharpness, minimal distortion, and high portability for both macro and everyday portrait photography. Cons include slow and occasionally noisy autofocus performance, a lack of built-in optical image stabilization, and a short working distance that can cause the lens barrel to block light when shooting at maximum magnification.
