What we like about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28 300mm F 3 5 5 6G ED VR

  • Extremely versatile focal range (28-300mm) perfect for travel and walk-around photography
  • Effective Vibration Reduction (VR) allows for sharp handheld shooting at slow shutter speeds
  • Excellent, fast, and quiet autofocus (AF-S) motor
  • Surprisingly good sharpness across the range for a superzoom
  • Solid build quality and reliable performance

What we don't like about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28 300mm F 3 5 5 6G ED VR

  • Noticeable barrel distortion at 28mm and pincushion distortion at 300mm
  • Maximum aperture is slow (f/5.6) at the telephoto end, limiting low-light performance
  • Significant vignetting when used wide-open
  • Lens creep (barrel extends on its own) when carried downward
  • Not professional-level image quality compared to prime or fast zoom lenses

Verdict

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is a highly versatile all-in-one superzoom lens designed for full-frame (FX-format) F-mount DSLRs, featuring a broad 10.7x zoom range, 19 elements in 14 groups (including 2 ED and 3 aspherical elements), and a 9-blade rounded aperture. Its main pros include robust central sharpness across the zoom range, a close minimum focusing distance of 0.45 metres with a 0.32x maximum reproduction ratio, a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet autofocus, and built-in VR II image stabilisation offering up to 3.5 stops of shake compensation. However, its main cons include a hefty weight of 800 grams, a variable variable-aperture design that limits low-light performance at the telephoto end, noticeable barrel and pincushion distortion, visible vignetting at extreme focal lengths, and soft performance along the edges of the frame when shot wide open.
