What we like about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm F 2 8

  • Excellent sharpness from center to corner at normal distances
  • Lightweight and compact design, ideal for everyday carry and travel
  • Versatile 40mm focal length (60mm equivalent) suitable for portraits and general photography
  • True 1:1 macro magnification capability
  • Quiet and accurate autofocus thanks to the Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
  • Pleasing background blur (bokeh) with a 7-blade diaphragm
  • Affordable entry-level price point for a dedicated macro lens
  • Minimal distortion and well-controlled chromatic aberration

What we don't like about Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm F 2 8

  • Extremely short working distance (approx. 3cm) at 1:1 magnification
  • Lens barrel can cast shadows on subjects due to close proximity
  • Lack of Vibration Reduction (VR/Image Stabilization)
  • Autofocus can be sluggish when hunting between extreme close-up and infinity
  • Edges and corners can be soft when shooting at wide apertures (f/2.8)
  • Not ideal for live insects as the close proximity may disturb them
  • The front of the lens extends significantly during close focusing

Verdict

The Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a compact and versatile DX-format macro lens offering a 60mm equivalent focal length and a true 1:1 life-size reproduction ratio. Key technical specifications include a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a minimum focusing distance of 16.3 cm (6.4 inches), and an optical construction of 9 elements in 7 groups with a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh. It features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet autofocus, Super Integrated Coating to reduce flare, and a Close Range Correction (CRC) system to maintain sharpness from infinity to its closest focus. Main advantages are its lightweight 235g design, excellent center sharpness, and affordability for entry-level macro and portrait work. However, its primary drawbacks include the lack of optical image stabilization (VR) and a very short working distance at maximum magnification, which can make lighting subjects or photographing skittish insects difficult.
