Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Lensbaby Sol 45 DSLR

  • Lightweight and compact metal body design that is easy to travel with
  • Provides a unique 'sweet spot' of focus with smooth, creative bokeh blur around edges
  • Features 'bokeh blades' that allow users to manually add texture and lines to background blur
  • Affordable entry point for photographers wanting to try the Lensbaby creative style
  • Swivel/tilt mechanism allows for moving the area of focus throughout the frame
  • Compatible with both Full Frame and APS-C crop sensor cameras

What we don't like about Lensbaby Sol 45 DSLR

  • Fixed f/3.5 aperture limits exposure control and depth of field options
  • Manual focus only, which can be difficult to nail, especially with moving subjects
  • Lack of electronic contacts means no EXIF data is recorded by the camera
  • Not intended for technical sharpness; edges are intentionally very blurry
  • Short focus throw can make precise focusing adjustments challenging
  • Low magnification ratio makes it unsuitable for dedicated macro photography

Verdict

The Lensbaby Sol 45 is a 45mm f/3.5 fixed-aperture manual focus lens designed for full-frame and APS-C DSLRs, featuring a 50mm equivalent focal length on crop sensors and a minimum focus distance of 14 inches. Its primary characteristic is a sharp central 'sweet spot' of focus surrounded by dramatic, circular blur, enhanced by a 8.5-degree tilting mechanism for selective focus and two integrated 'bokeh blades' that add texture to highlights. Pros include its lightweight, all-metal construction, creative tactile control, and affordable entry into art photography, though it is limited by a fixed f/3.5 aperture, lack of electronic communication with the camera, and a steep learning curve for precise manual focusing.
