What we like about Lensbaby Circular Fisheye

  • Extremely fun and highly creative tool for artistic experimentation
  • Ultra-wide 185-degree field of view captures expansive landscapes and unique perspectives
  • Excellent close-focusing capability down to 1/4 inch from the front element
  • Highly affordable and offers a great value proposition compared to native brand fisheye lenses
  • Polished internal barrel design creates beautiful, intentional ring reflections and flare halos
  • Lightweight, compact, and easy to fit inside a standard gear bag
  • Solid center sharpness when capturing circular images

What we don't like about Lensbaby Circular Fisheye

  • Completely manual operation lacking any electronic communication, autofocus, or metadata transfer
  • Not intended for daily general-purpose or accurate documentation photography
  • Extreme edge and corner quality degrades significantly due to severe distortion
  • The ultra-wide field of view makes it exceptionally easy to accidentally include your fingers or feet in the frame
  • Requires a full-frame camera to capture a true, uninterrupted circular border without sensor cropping
  • Plastic build quality, a slightly gritty manual focus ring, and loose aperture ring detents

Verdict

The Lensbaby Circular Fisheye is a fully manual 5.8mm prime lens designed primarily for APS-C sensors, though it is compatible with full-frame cameras where it produces a smaller image circle. It features a fast f/3.5 maximum aperture (stopping down to f/22) and an ultra-wide 185-degree field of view that captures a complete circular image surrounded by a black border. Key characteristics include a polished internal barrel that creates creative flare and reflections, along with an extreme close-focus capability of just 0.25 inches. Its main pros are the unique 'other-worldly' distortion, exceptional central sharpness, and an affordable price point for artistic experimentation. However, users should note cons such as the lack of electronic communication with the camera, a focus ring that can feel gritty, and significant softness at the extreme edges of the image circle.
