Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Samyang 8mm F 3 5 UMC Fisheye CS II

  • Excellent sharpness, especially when stopped down to f/5.6
  • Very high build quality with a mix of metal and robust plastic, creating a solid, durable feel
  • Affordable price point compared to competing fisheye lenses
  • Smooth and well-damped manual focus and aperture rings
  • Removable lens hood allows for versatility, including partial circular fisheye effects on full-frame sensors

What we don't like about Samyang 8mm F 3 5 UMC Fisheye CS II

  • Fully manual lens (no autofocus or electronic communication with the camera)
  • Image quality is soft at f/3.5, particularly towards the edges
  • Noticeable chromatic aberration (purple/green fringing) in high-contrast areas
  • Susceptible to lens flaring when shooting directly into the sun
  • Permanent/thick lens hood design restricts the use of screw-in filters

Verdict

The Samyang 8mm f/3.5 UMC Fish-Eye CS II is an ultra-wide manual focus prime lens designed for APS-C sensors, featuring a 180-degree diagonal angle of view and an optical construction of 10 elements in 7 groups, including one hybrid aspherical element and Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC). Its primary advantages include excellent edge-to-edge sharpness when stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8, a highly durable metal body, a removable petal-shaped lens hood that enables creative partial-circular use on full-frame cameras, and an exceptionally deep field of field at a very affordable price point. However, its main disadvantages are its strictly manual focus system, lack of built-in image stabilization, inability to mount front filters due to a bulbous front element, and noticeable corner softness with ghosting when shot wide open at f/3.5.
