What we like about Fujifilm GF 30mm F 5 6 T S

  • Exceptional sharpness across the frame, even at f/5.6
  • Minimal vignetting and chromatic aberration, even at maximum shift
  • High-quality metal build with smooth, precise mechanical controls
  • Built-in sensors record tilt and shift data in the image EXIF
  • Large knobs are easy to operate, even when wearing gloves
  • Large image circle allows for significant ±15mm shifting

What we don't like about Fujifilm GF 30mm F 5 6 T S

  • Large and heavy (approx. 1.3kg), making tripod use almost essential
  • Lacks weather sealing (WR), common for complex tilt-shift designs
  • Protruding front element requires an adapter ring for standard lens caps
  • 105mm filter thread is large and requires expensive specialized filters
  • Minor barrel distortion and astigmatism at extreme shift ranges
  • Ergonomic issues such as potential finger pinches during rotation

Verdict

The Fujifilm GF 30mm f/5.6 T/S is a specialized wide-angle tilt-shift lens designed for the GFX medium format system, offering a 24mm equivalent focal length and an advanced optical construction of 16 elements in 11 groups (including 3 aspherical and 3 ED elements). Main characteristics include a massive 85mm image circle that allows for ±15mm of shift and ±8.5° of tilt with a dedicated sensor that records these adjustments directly into image metadata. Pros include exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness capable of resolving 100+ megapixels, precise mechanical controls for architectural and landscape work, and a removable tripod collar that maintains the nodal point during adjustments. Cons include its substantial weight of 1,340g, lack of weather sealing due to its complex moving parts, and a high professional price point.
