What we like about Hasselblad XCD 45mm F3 5

  • Exceptional center and edge sharpness with strong micro-contrast
  • Robust, tank-like metal build quality with effective weather sealing
  • Compact and lightweight profile compared to traditional medium format lenses
  • Very low chromatic aberration and nominal barrel distortion
  • Central leaf shutter allows full flash synchronization up to 1/2000s
  • Highly versatile focal length equivalent to a 35mm lens on full-frame cameras
  • Pleasurable manual focusing experience with smooth physical resistance
  • Excellent flare resistance when shooting against direct light sources

What we don't like about Hasselblad XCD 45mm F3 5

  • Autofocus operation is noticeably slow and noisy on older camera bodies
  • Heavy vignetting when shooting wide open at f/3.5, requiring software profile correction
  • Lacks built-in optical image stabilization
  • Aperture of f/3.5 is slower compared to full-frame equivalents, limiting depth-of-field separation
  • Considerably higher price tag and larger footprint relative to the newer XCD 45mm f/4 P alternative

Verdict

The Hasselblad XCD 45mm f/3.5 is a professional-grade medium format prime lens for the X-system, featuring a 35mm full-frame equivalent focal length of 35mm and an aperture range of f/3.5 to f/32. Its optical construction consists of 9 elements in 7 groups, housed in a robust, weather-sealed metal casing with a 67mm filter thread and a weight of 417g. The lens is defined by its integrated central leaf shutter, which supports flash synchronization at all speeds up to 1/2000s, and it offers a minimum focus distance of 40cm. Main pros include exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness, high micro-contrast, and a compact form factor that balances well on mirrorless bodies. However, notable cons include relatively slow and audible autofocus performance and a 'focus-by-wire' manual focusing system that some users find less tactile than mechanical alternatives.
