What we like about Fujifilm FUJINON GF 80mm F 1 7 R WR

  • Extremely sharp image quality, even when shooting wide open at f/1.7
  • Beautiful and smooth bokeh with excellent subject separation
  • Brightest autofocus lens available for the medium format GFX system
  • Relatively compact and lightweight compared to other fast medium format primes
  • Professional-grade build quality with robust weather and dust sealing
  • Excellent low-light performance due to the wide f/1.7 aperture
  • Minimal distortion and low vignetting

What we don't like about Fujifilm FUJINON GF 80mm F 1 7 R WR

  • Autofocus is somewhat slow and can be noisy (uses a DC motor instead of a linear motor)
  • Occasional longitudinal chromatic aberration (LoCA) or green/purple fringing in high-contrast areas
  • No built-in optical image stabilization (relies on camera's IBIS)
  • Autofocus can struggle with fast-moving subjects or 'double-clutch' before locking
  • Noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration that may require post-processing correction

Verdict

The Fujifilm Fujinon GF 80mm f/1.7 R WR is a high-speed prime lens for the GFX medium format system, offering a 63mm full-frame equivalent focal length and a world-leading f/1.7 maximum aperture. Its optical design features 12 elements in 9 groups, including one aspherical and two Super ED elements to ensure exceptional resolving power and minimal chromatic aberration. Key pros include its incredible low-light performance, creamy bokeh produced by a nine-blade rounded diaphragm, and a robust, weather-sealed construction that remains relatively compact at 795g. However, main cons include a somewhat slow and audible DC autofocus motor that may struggle with fast-moving subjects, noticeable focus breathing, and the lack of built-in optical image stabilisation.
