Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm F 1 2 S

  • Exceptional sharpness even wide open at f/1.2
  • Beautiful, creamy bokeh and smooth background transition
  • Fast, accurate, and near-silent dual STM autofocus system
  • Superb build quality with extensive weather sealing
  • Minimal distortion and excellent flare resistance (Nano Crystal Coat)
  • Professional handling with customizable control ring and L-Fn button

What we don't like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm F 1 2 S

  • Significantly large and heavy (over 2.5 lbs), can be front-heavy on smaller bodies
  • High retail price compared to f/1.8 alternatives
  • Limited close-focus capabilities (0.85m minimum distance)
  • Significant 82mm filter size increases accessory costs
  • Presence of focus breathing may affect some video applications

Verdict

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S is a premium S-Line short-telephoto prime lens designed for the full-frame Z-mount mirrorless system, featuring an ultra-fast f/1.2 maximum aperture, a minimum aperture of f/16, and an advanced optical structure of 15 elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical elements and 1 ED element. Main characteristics and pros include an 11-blade rounded diaphragm that produces exceptionally smooth, circular bokeh and distinct subject isolation, a dual STM multi-focusing autofocus system that delivers swift, quiet tracking for both portraiture and video, a specialized Nano Crystal Coat to suppress ghosting and flare, full weather sealing, and a customizable L-Fn button and control ring. However, its main cons are its massive physical footprint, heavy weight of approximately 1,160 grams, expensive price point, lack of built-in optical vibration reduction, and a relatively distant minimum focusing distance of 0.85 meters with a poor 0.11x maximum magnification ratio.
