Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Cosina Voigtlander Heliar 40mm F 2 8

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, making it an ideal walk-around lens
  • High build quality with a durable all-metal (brass) construction and retro aesthetic
  • Excellent sharpness in the center, even when used wide open at f/2.8
  • Smooth and pleasing bokeh quality provided by a 10-blade diaphragm
  • Modern multi-coatings offer strong flare resistance and high contrast
  • Versatile 40mm focal length that bridges the gap between 35mm and 50mm

What we don't like about Cosina Voigtlander Heliar 40mm F 2 8

  • Lack of 40mm frame lines on most Leica cameras, requiring guesstimation or an external viewfinder
  • Noticeable vignetting and softer performance in the extreme corners at wide apertures
  • Quirky ergonomics, such as a rotating front element during focusing that can make adjusting aperture difficult
  • Presence of field curvature and a 'midzone dip' in sharpness that requires stopping down to f/8 or f/11 to resolve
  • Some versions feature an infinity lock that can be cumbersome for certain users or incompatible with specific adapters
  • The 34mm filter thread is uncommon and may require specialized filters or adapters

Verdict

The Cosina Voigtlander Heliar 40mm F2.8 Aspherical is an ultra-compact manual prime lens featuring a retro brass construction, an optical formula of 5 elements in 3 groups with one aspherical element, and a 10-blade aperture diaphragm ranging from F2.8 to F22. Main characteristics include a highly portable form factor measuring just 21.2mm in length, a small 34mm front filter thread, a 57-degree field of view, and a minimum focusing distance of 0.7 meters with an integrated infinity lock mechanism. The primary pros are its lightweight design, robust build quality, punchy contrast, and impressive central sharpness even when shooting wide open. However, notable cons include visible vignetting and a soft mid-zone dip or field curvature that leaves the extreme corners somewhat soft below F5.6, along with a front barrel and aperture ring that rotate simultaneously during manual focusing.
