What we like about 7Artisans 35mm F 2 Mark II

  • Excellent value for money, often cited as a budget alternative to the Leica Summicron
  • Solid all-metal construction with a premium feel and smooth manual focus
  • High center sharpness even wide open at f/2, which improves across the frame when stopped down
  • Compact and lightweight design, making it ideal for street and travel photography
  • Pleasing bokeh and '3D pop' characteristics attributed to its 10-blade aperture
  • Improved ergonomics over the Mark I, including half-stop aperture clicks and a convenient focus tab

What we don't like about 7Artisans 35mm F 2 Mark II

  • Poor flare resistance, often producing noticeable red ring flares or loss of contrast in direct light
  • Noticeable barrel distortion and edge softness, especially on digital full-frame sensors
  • Lack of 'micro-contrast' or absolute resolution compared to high-end Leica or Zeiss optics
  • Vignetting is visible at wider apertures, though it is considered manageable
  • Quality control can be inconsistent, with some users reporting factory calibration issues

Verdict

The 7artisans 35mm f/2 Mark II is a compact, full-frame manual-focus prime lens designed for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras, featuring a 63-degree angle of view, an updated optical formulation of 8 elements in 7 groups, and a 10-blade diaphragm with a clicked aperture ring ranging from f/2 to f/22. Main characteristics include a durable, all-aluminum metal body, a 55mm front filter size, a square lens hood, a integrated finger focus tab, and a minimum focusing distance of 0.7 meters. The primary pros are its affordable price point, compact walkaround portability, smooth manual focus throw, and high optical performance with impressive corner-to-corner sharpness and pleasing bokeh quality. However, main cons include potential purple fringing and lateral chromatic aberrations at wide apertures, noticeable barrel distortion on straight lines, and lack of weather sealing.
