What we like about Linksys WRT160NL

  • Open-source friendly with support for Linux-based custom firmware like DD-WRT
  • Includes a Storage Link (USB port) for connecting external hard drives or flash drives
  • Features two external detachable antennas for better signal positioning
  • User-friendly web-based management interface with helpful setup software
  • Compact and sleek 'sleek-wing' design that remains low-profile
  • Good set of legacy networking features including QoS and SPI firewall protection

What we don't like about Linksys WRT160NL

  • Lacks Gigabit Ethernet ports, restricting wired speeds to 100Mbps
  • Limited to the 2.4GHz band only (no 5GHz support), which is prone to interference
  • Wireless throughput performance is significantly slower compared to newer 'N' generation rivals
  • Internal thermal design can lead to heat issues, with some users needing to flip it upside down
  • USB 2.0 port speeds are relatively slow for high-capacity file transfers
  • Lacks modern features like guest access or a built-in on-router display

Verdict

The Linksys WRT160NL is a Linux-based Wireless-N broadband router featuring a 2.4 GHz Atheros chipset with 32MB of RAM and 8MB of ROM. It provides wireless data transfer rates up to 270 Mbps (Draft 802.11n) and is equipped with four 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports, a USB 2.0 'Storage Link' port for NAS functionality, and two detachable external antennas. Its main pros include its open-source friendliness for custom firmware like DD-WRT, a built-in DLNA media server, and flexible antenna customization. However, it lacks Gigabit Ethernet ports, does not support the 5 GHz band, and has been noted for relatively slow file transfer speeds compared to newer standards.
