How the coffee machines score works

How the overall 0.0 – 10.0 score is determined for every product in Coffee Machines.

Overall score formula
Overall score (0–10)=Technical score × 95–100%+Review score × 5%

Every model in this category gets the same split: reviews 5%, technical score 95%. A model needs 2 weighted reviews; each missing one counts as 7/10.

Technical score

Lab & technical specifications
95–100%

Multi-parameter evaluation based on objective hardware specifications, benchmark measurements, energy efficiency, capacity, and materials.

Calculation: weighted sum of all 4 evaluation areas, each derived from measured parameter scores.
Sources:Manufacturer Technical SheetsLaboratory BenchmarksStandardized Energy Metrics

Review score

Independent test sites and reviewers
0–5%

Every independent review of the model gets a grade from 1 to 10: the reviewer's own score when the page shows one (stars, x/10, test grade), otherwise a grade from the written verdict on a fixed scale.

Calculation: weighted average of the grades. A full test counts 1, a short review or a video review 0.5; leading test labs and magazines count up to 25% more, small blogs 20% less.
Sources:Test sites and magazinesVideo reviews6 languages
Worked example (illustrative numbers)
  1. Technical score: a product scores 9.20 across all 4 technical areas.
  2. Review score: 1 of its 2 needed reviews are graded, averaging 8.60; the missing one counts as 7, so its review score is 7.80.
  3. Overall score: (9.20 × 0.95) + (7.80 × 0.05) = 9.1 / 10.0

How we use expert reviews

Which reviews count and how their grades become the review score.

What counts as a review

Only independent reviews of that exact model: test sites, magazines and video reviewers in 6 languages. Shop pages, brand-paid content, pure list pages and pages without a verdict are left out.

Shop ratings are no longer in the score

Since version 2.0, star ratings from online shops no longer count towards the overall score in this category, and graded video reviews count next to written tests. Expert reviews compare models side by side and are harder to game than shop ratings.

How much reviews count

The review share is set per category by how many weighted reviews a typical model has: when half the models have 8+, reviews count 35%; 7+ 30%; 6+ 25%; 5+ 20%; 4+ 15%; 3+ 10%; 2+ 5%. With fewer, reviews are shown but not scored. Every model in the category gets the same split.

Why a missing review counts as 7/10

A model with few reviews should not win or lose on one or two grades. Each missing review counts as 7/10, an average grade, so a model moves far from 7 only when several independent reviews agree. Our own grades of reviews without a printed score are aligned to the level of printed scores (blind test: +1). We grade the most trusted reviews first and keep adding the rest; every graded review counts.
