Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Sony FE 16mm F 1 8 G

  • Extremely compact and lightweight (only 304g), making it ideal for gimbal and travel use.
  • Excellent center sharpness even at the wide-open f/1.8 aperture.
  • Blazing fast and near-silent autofocus powered by dual XD linear motors.
  • Very impressive close-focus capability (13-15cm) for creative wide-angle macro-style shots.
  • Rich physical controls, including a de-clickable aperture ring and customizable focus hold button.
  • Great value proposition, offering performance similar to the 14mm GM at a significantly lower price.

What we don't like about Sony FE 16mm F 1 8 G

  • Notable vignetting and barrel distortion in RAW files that require digital correction profiles.
  • Corner sharpness can be slightly soft at f/1.8, needing to be stopped down for critical edge-to-edge detail.
  • Noticeable focus breathing, though modern Sony bodies can compensate for this in-camera.
  • Some users find the high-quality plastic construction feels less premium than metal-housed lenses.
  • Visible coma and astigmatism in the extreme corners can affect high-end astrophotography.

Verdict

The Sony FE 16mm f/1.8 G is a compact ultra-wide prime lens for full-frame E-mount cameras, weighing just 304g and featuring a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture ideal for astrophotography and low-light landscapes. Key technical specs include an 11-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh, 15 elements in 12 groups (including two Advanced Aspherical and three ED elements), and dual XD Linear Motors for fast, silent autofocus. It is highly praised for its portability, sharpness, and the rare ability to use standard 67mm front filters on such a wide lens; however, it suffers from heavy vignetting of over 5EV in uncorrected raw files and lacks built-in image stabilisation.
