What we like about Sony DT 16 105mm F 3 5 5 6

  • Tremendously useful and versatile 6.6x zoom range for general-purpose use
  • Good centre resolution, particularly at shorter focal lengths
  • Compact and lightweight body compared to lenses with similar ranges
  • Solid build quality with a metal mount and smooth zoom actuation
  • Fast and accurate autofocus performance for both stills and video
  • Circular 7-blade aperture provides more natural-looking bokeh

What we don't like about Sony DT 16 105mm F 3 5 5 6

  • Noticeable softness and reduced resolution toward the edges of the frame from 50mm onwards
  • Significant barrel distortion at the widest 16mm setting
  • Variable aperture makes it a 'slow' lens, performing poorly in low-light conditions
  • Prone to lens flare and loss of contrast when shooting toward strong light sources
  • Pronounced chromatic aberration in certain high-contrast scenarios
  • External zoom design can be harder to seal against dust and moisture

Verdict

The Sony DT 16-105mm F3.5-5.6 is a versatile standard zoom lens designed for APS-C format A-mount DSLRs, offering a broad 6.6x zoom range equivalent to 24-157.5mm in 35mm terms. Its optical construction features 15 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical elements and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element to maintain contrast and minimize aberrations, alongside a 7-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh. Main characteristics include an internal focusing system that keeps the lens barrel stationary during autofocus and a minimum focusing distance of 0.4m (1.31 ft). Key pros are its impressively sharp performance at the wide-angle 16mm setting, its compact and lightweight build at approximately 470g, and its flexible focal range that serves as an excellent 'one-lens' solution for travel and general photography. However, notable cons include significant edge softening at wide apertures, high distortion and vignetting at the 16mm extreme, and visible chromatic aberration at both ends of the zoom range.
