Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Samyang 35mm F 1 2 ED AS UMC CS

  • Excellent center sharpness even at the maximum f/1.2 aperture
  • Creamy and smooth bokeh thanks to the 9-blade rounded diaphragm
  • High build quality with a solid metal mount and smooth focus ring
  • Extremely low levels of chromatic aberration and distortion
  • Good resistance to lens flare and ghosting when shooting against light
  • Great value for money compared to original manufacturer f/1.2 lenses

What we don't like about Samyang 35mm F 1 2 ED AS UMC CS

  • Manual focus only, which makes tracking moving subjects difficult
  • No electronic contacts, so aperture and lens metadata are not recorded
  • Heavy vignetting when used at the wide-open f/1.2 aperture
  • Slightly soft performance at the edges of the frame until stopped down
  • Lack of a depth of field scale on the lens barrel
  • Short focus throw (around 120 degrees) can make precise focus at f/1.2 tricky

Verdict

The Samyang 35mm f/1.2 ED AS UMC CS is an ultra-bright, manual focus prime lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, offering a 'normal' 52.5mm equivalent focal length. Its optical construction features 9 elements in 7 groups, including two aspherical and one extra-low dispersion element, complemented by Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) to reduce flare. Key performance pros include exceptional center sharpness even at f/1.2, virtually zero distortion, and a 9-blade circular diaphragm that produces smooth, creamy bokeh. The lens is well-regarded for its solid metal build, 0.38m minimum focus distance, and compact 420g frame. However, notable cons include the lack of autofocus and electronic contacts for EXIF metadata, heavy vignetting when wide open, and the absence of weather sealing or a depth-of-field scale.
