Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F 1 2 Pro

  • Exceptional center sharpness even wide open at f/1.2
  • Beautifully rendered 'feathered' bokeh with smooth background transition
  • Premium, weather-sealed metal construction (IPX1-rated)
  • Extremely fast, silent, and accurate autofocus performance
  • Effective control of chromatic aberration and distortion
  • Pleasing manual focus experience with a dedicated clutch mechanism
  • Excellent performance in low-light conditions due to the f/1.2 aperture

What we don't like about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F 1 2 Pro

  • High price point compared to other Micro Four Thirds portrait options
  • Relatively large and heavy for a prime lens on small MFT bodies
  • Visible vignetting (corner dimness) when shooting wide open
  • Lacks optical image stabilization (relies on camera body IBIS)
  • Susceptible to some flare and ghosting in specific lighting
  • Manual focus clutch can be accidentally engaged due to soft movement

Verdict

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm f/1.2 PRO is a premium medium telephoto prime lens designed for Micro Four Thirds systems, delivering a 90mm full-frame equivalent focal length. Its advanced optical formulation features 14 elements in 10 groups, a 9-blade circular aperture, a 62mm filter thread, and a 0.5-metre minimum focusing distance. Key advantages include an ultra-bright f/1.2 maximum aperture for superb low-light performance, exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness even when shot wide open, a fast and silent MSC autofocus mechanism, a manual focus clutch, and a rugged, IPX1-rated weather-sealed metal construction that provides feathered bokeh. However, it is significantly heavier at 410 grams and larger than typical Micro Four Thirds primes, carries a high retail cost, lacks optical image stabilization, and can exhibit susceptibility to ghosting flare when pointed directly at strong light sources.
