Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 26mm F 2 8

  • Extremely compact 'pancake' design, currently the slimmest AF full-frame lens available
  • Excellent center sharpness and contrast even at the widest f/2.8 aperture
  • Lightweight build with a durable metal mount and weather sealing
  • Good close-focusing capabilities with a minimum distance of 20cm
  • Effective control of flare and impressive sunstar performance

What we don't like about Nikon NIKKOR Z 26mm F 2 8

  • Noticeably weak corner and mid-frame sharpness throughout most aperture settings
  • Relatively slow and audible (noisy) autofocus motor compared to other Z-series lenses
  • Significant vignetting (dark corners) and barrel distortion when shooting RAW without in-camera corrections
  • Noticeable focus breathing and focus shift as the lens is stopped down
  • Higher price point (approx. $500) compared to the similar Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8 lens

Verdict

The Nikon Nikkor Z 26mm f/2.8 is an ultra-compact, full-frame wide-angle pancake prime lens measuring just 70mm x 23.5mm and weighing an exceptionally light 125g. It features a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, a minimum focusing distance of 0.2m, three aspherical elements to minimize aberrations, a customizable control ring, and a durable metal lens mount with dust and drip resistance. Its main pros include best-in-class portability, a sleek and unobtrusive profile ideal for street and travel photography, and excellent center sharpness even when shooting wide open. However, its main cons include a slower, audible external autofocus motor that creates video recording noise, significant focus breathing, weak corner sharpness throughout the aperture range, and noticeable vignetting and barrel distortion before software corrections.
