Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70 200mm F 4G ED VR

  • Extremely sharp image quality across the frame
  • Lightweight and compact design, making it highly portable compared to f/2.8 versions
  • Effective 5-stop Vibration Reduction (VR) system
  • Fast and accurate autofocus performance
  • Excellent close-focusing capability (shorter minimum focus distance than many alternatives)
  • Good build quality despite not being fully metal

What we don't like about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70 200mm F 4G ED VR

  • Plastic-intensive barrel construction feels less durable than professional f/2.8 counterparts
  • Tripod collar is not included and is expensive to purchase separately
  • Max aperture of f/4 limits low-light capability compared to f/2.8 lenses
  • Minor focus breathing
  • No longer in production (found only on the used market)

Verdict

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR is a high-performance, FX-format telephoto zoom lens featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture, a 2.9x zoom ratio, and an optical construction of 20 elements in 14 groups, including three ED glass elements and one HRI element. Key advantages include a remarkably lightweight design at 850 grams, up to 5 stops of third-generation Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nano Crystal Coating to minimize flare, a fast Silent Wave Motor autofocus system, and a short 1-meter minimum focus distance. However, notable drawbacks include the exclusion of a tripod collar ring as a standard accessory, a maximum aperture that limits extremely shallow depth of field compared to f/2.8 alternatives, and visible vignetting when shot wide open at f/4.
