What we like about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom NIKKOR 18 55mm F 3 5 5 6G ED II

  • Extremely lightweight and compact design
  • High center sharpness, especially when stopped down to f/5.6-f/8
  • Excellent value for money as a budget-friendly kit lens
  • Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides quiet and accurate autofocus
  • Impressive close-focusing capabilities for near-macro photography
  • Effective at minimizing flare and ghosting with Super Integrated Coating

What we don't like about Nikon AF-S DX Zoom NIKKOR 18 55mm F 3 5 5 6G ED II

  • Lack of Vibration Reduction (VR) / image stabilization in this specific model
  • Noticeable barrel distortion at the 18mm wide end
  • Plastic lens mount and flimsier build compared to higher-end lenses
  • Rotating front element makes using filters (like polarizers) difficult
  • Manual focus ring is thin with a very short travel range
  • Narrow maximum aperture limits performance in low-light conditions

Verdict

The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II is an ultra-compact and lightweight 3.1x standard zoom lens designed exclusively for DX-format DSLRs, offering a versatile 35mm-equivalent focal range of 27–82.5mm. It features a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast and quiet autofocus, an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element to minimize chromatic aberration, and a hybrid aspherical element for high resolution and contrast. Main pros include its highly portable 205g design, excellent 11-inch close-focusing capability, and a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for natural out-of-focus highlights. However, it lacks Vibration Reduction (VR) found in newer versions, uses a plastic lens mount that can feel flimsy, and often exhibits significant barrel distortion at the 18mm wide-angle end.
