What we like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm F 2D

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, making it an ideal walk-around lens.
  • Very sharp in the center of the frame, especially when stopped down slightly.
  • Fast f/2 maximum aperture performs well in low-light conditions.
  • Features a physical aperture ring, allowing compatibility with older film bodies.
  • Fast and accurate autofocus on cameras with internal focus motors.
  • Close focusing distance of 0.85 feet allows for great close-up shots.
  • Affordable price point compared to modern Z-mount or G-series alternatives.

What we don't like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 35mm F 2D

  • Noticeable softness and vignetting at the corners when shooting wide open at f/2.
  • Lacks an internal autofocus motor, so it will not autofocus on entry-level Nikon DSLRs (D3000/D5000 series).
  • Visible chromatic aberration at wider apertures (f/2 to f/2.8).
  • Plastic outer construction, though the mount is metal, can feel less premium than pro-grade lenses.
  • Prone to lens flare if used without a hood in challenging lighting.
  • Older screw-drive AF system can be noisier than modern silent wave motors.

Verdict

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D is a compact wide-angle prime lens designed for FX-format cameras, featuring an optical construction of 6 elements in 5 groups and a 7-blade rounded diaphragm. Key specifications include a fast f/2 maximum aperture, a minimum focus distance of 0.25m (0.85 ft), and a lightweight build weighing only 205g with a 52mm filter thread. Its main pros are its portability, solid metal mount construction, and excellent sharpness in the center even at wider apertures, making it ideal for street and landscape photography. However, common cons include soft performance in the corners at f/2, noticeable vignetting when wide open, and the lack of an internal autofocus motor, meaning it requires a camera body with a built-in screw-drive motor for autofocus.
