What we like about Lensbaby Velvet 85

  • High-quality, durable all-metal construction
  • Creates a beautiful, artistic, dreamy velvet glow at wide apertures (f/1.8 to f/2.8)
  • Becomes impressively sharp in the center when stopped down (f/4 and above)
  • Versatile 3-in-1 capability serving as a portrait, soft-focus, and 1:2 macro lens
  • Smooth, fluid, and precise manual focusing ring
  • Excellent, buttery bokeh and round highlights thanks to the 12-blade aperture diaphragm
  • Very good low-light performance with the bright f/1.8 maximum aperture

What we don't like about Lensbaby Velvet 85

  • Completely manual operation with no autofocus or image stabilization capabilities
  • Difficult to hit critical focus when shooting wide open at f/1.8 due to the extreme softness
  • Lacks electronic contacts, meaning no EXIF data communication with the camera body
  • Excessively long focus throw required to move from infinity to macro distances
  • Noticeably heavy and bulky compared to other standard Lensbaby optics
  • The uncoupled aperture mechanism darkens the viewfinder significantly at higher f-stops
  • The prominent soft-focus effect is highly niche and an acquired taste

Verdict

The Lensbaby Velvet 85 is a 85mm f/1.8 manual focus prime lens designed for full-frame and APS-C cameras, featuring a unique optical design of 4 elements in 3 groups and a 12-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh. Its main characteristic is the ability to produce a soft, 'velvety' glowing aesthetic with high lateral aberration at wide apertures, while stopping down to f/16 results in tack-sharp, film-like images. Key pros include a versatile 1:2 macro capability with a 24cm minimum focus distance, a high-quality all-metal build, and a long-throw focusing ring ideal for precise adjustments. However, notable cons include the lack of autofocus and electronic communication for EXIF data, a relatively heavy weight of approximately 1.2 pounds, and the difficulty of establishing critical focus when the signature glow effect is most intense at f/1.8.
