What we like about Lensbaby Composer Pro II W Edge 50 Optic

  • High build quality with an upgraded metal body
  • Exceptionally sharp optic, especially when stopped down slightly
  • Produces unique and beautiful colors
  • Lightweight and compact design makes it easy to carry
  • Interchangeable optic swap system allows for creative versatility
  • Excellent close-focus/macro capabilities (down to 8 inches)
  • Significantly more affordable than traditional professional tilt-shift lenses

What we don't like about Lensbaby Composer Pro II W Edge 50 Optic

  • Steep learning curve; challenging to master the 'slice of focus' initially
  • Lack of electronic communication with the camera means no EXIF data or autofocus
  • Manual focus can be difficult to nail without focus peaking or live view magnification
  • Slow workflow makes it unsuitable for 'run-and-gun' or event photography
  • Optic can be overly soft for practical use when shot wide open
  • Mounting and removing optics can be tricky for new users
  • Lacks a physical 'click' or indicator to confirm when the optic is perfectly centered

Verdict

The Lensbaby Composer Pro II with Edge 50 Optic is a 50mm manual-focus tilt lens featuring an f/3.2 to f/22 aperture range, an 8-element/6-group optical design, a 9-blade internal diaphragm, and a 46mm filter thread. Its upgraded metal ball-and-socket body delivers up to 15 degrees of smooth tilt functionality, making it fully compatible with the interchangeable Optic Swap System. Main advantages include precise, in-camera depth-of-field control that creates a sharp "slice of focus" bordered by smooth blur, a close minimum focusing distance of 20.3 cm (8 inches), and excellent tactile build quality. However, the system is strictly manual with no electronic camera communication, images can be noticeably soft when shot wide open at f/3.2, and mounting the optic can initially be tricky.
