What we like about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100 400mm F 5 6 3 IS

  • Extremely long reach (200-800mm equivalent) in a relatively compact and lightweight package
  • Excellent sharpness throughout the zoom range, even wide open at 400mm
  • Reliable autofocus tracking and consistency, especially on modern bodies like the OM-1
  • Robust weather-sealed construction with smooth zoom and focus rings
  • Built-in Arca-Swiss compatible tripod collar for quick mounting
  • Compatible with M.Zuiko 1.4x and 2x teleconverters

What we don't like about Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100 400mm F 5 6 3 IS

  • Slow maximum aperture (f/5-6.3) makes it challenging in low light
  • Image stabilization does not sync with the body, relying only on lens IS
  • Slight decrease in sharpness at the extreme 400mm end compared to prime lenses
  • Feels less premium ('plasticky') compared to Pro-grade lenses
  • Lacks the manual focus clutch mechanism found on some other Olympus lenses

Verdict

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS is a versatile super-telephoto zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds systems, providing a massive 200-800mm full-frame equivalent focal range. Its optical design features 21 elements in 15 groups—including four ED and two Super HR elements—to ensure high resolution and clarity. Key characteristics include a lightweight 1,120g build, IPX1-rated weather sealing (dust, splash, and freeze-proof), and a 1.3m minimum focus distance for 0.57x equivalent telemacro magnification. Main pros are its incredible reach in a portable form factor, compatibility with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters (reaching up to 1600mm), and fast MSC autofocus with a 3-setting focus limiter. However, some cons include a relatively 'slow' variable aperture that limits low-light performance and the fact that its 3-stop lens-based image stabilisation does not fully synchronise with in-body Sync IS on older Olympus camera bodies.
