Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 180mm F 2 8D IF ED

  • Exceptional sharpness even when shot wide open at f/2.8
  • High build quality with a durable metal barrel and crinkle finish
  • Compact and lightweight compared to 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom alternatives
  • Excellent color reproduction and smooth, creamy bokeh
  • Convenient built-in sliding lens hood
  • Minimal distortion and vignetting for a telephoto prime

What we don't like about Nikon AF NIKKOR 180mm F 2 8D IF ED

  • Lacks a built-in autofocus motor (will not AF on Nikon D3xxx or D5xxx series)
  • No image stabilization (Vibration Reduction), making it harder to use handheld in low light
  • Autofocus speed is accurate but slower than modern AF-S or AF-P lenses
  • Clumsy A/M focus mode switch that requires changing settings on both lens and body
  • Susceptible to veiling flare when shooting toward strong light sources
  • Minimum focus distance of 1.5m (5 feet) can be limiting for close-up work

Verdict

The Nikon AF Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D IF-ED is a legendary prime telephoto lens featuring a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, 8 elements in 6 groups, and a 9-blade rounded diaphragm for exceptional bokeh. Renowned for its Internal Focusing (IF) system and Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass, it delivers high-contrast, tack-sharp imagery in a compact, 760g all-metal barrel. While praised for its superb optical quality and portable size, its main drawbacks include a lack of built-in vibration reduction and a slower, noisy screw-drive autofocus that requires a camera body with an internal AF motor.
