Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Lensbaby Burnside 35

  • Unique 'Petzval' style swirly bokeh and vintage aesthetic
  • Highly durable all-metal construction and high build quality
  • Excellent central sharpness and high contrast, even when shot wide open
  • Dedicated 'effect slider' allows for precise, in-camera vignette and swirl control
  • Smooth and precise manual focusing ring with a long throw
  • Extremely close minimum focus distance of 6 inches, useful for macro-style shots

What we don't like about Lensbaby Burnside 35

  • Noticeable loss of sharpness and significant softness at the frame edges
  • Effect is much less pronounced on APS-C or Micro Four Thirds crop sensors
  • High price point for a 'creative' specialty lens
  • Steep learning curve to master the balance of aperture and vignette settings
  • Manual-only controls may not suit all photographers or fast-paced shooting
  • Metal lens cap can be easily knocked off in a camera bag

Verdict

The Lensbaby Burnside 35 is a 35mm f/2.8 manual focus lens featuring a unique dual-diaphragm system designed for full-frame cameras. Its primary characteristic is the ability to create a sharp central area surrounded by swirling bokeh and a variable vignette, controlled by a dedicated secondary slider. Main pros include its robust metal construction, 6-inch minimum focus distance, and creative control over background texture. However, cons involve its steep learning curve for manual focusing, significant edge softness, and the tendency for the swirl effect to become distracting or lost depending on the background distance and aperture settings.
