Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about Hasselblad XCD 45mm F 4 P

  • Extremely compact and lightweight design, making it highly portable for travel and street photography
  • Exceptional image quality with high levels of sharpness and detail even when shooting wide open
  • Aggressively priced compared to other medium format lenses, offering high value
  • Features a mechanically coupled focus ring for a more responsive manual focusing experience compared to focus-by-wire
  • Nearly silent leaf shutter allows for discreet shooting and high-speed flash sync up to 1/2000s
  • Minimal distortion and excellent resistance to flare

What we don't like about Hasselblad XCD 45mm F 4 P

  • Autofocus is slow compared to modern full-frame standards and can hunt in certain conditions
  • Autofocus motors are reported to be distractingly loud and unpleasant by some users
  • Maximum aperture of f/4 can be limiting for low-light photography
  • Does not include a lens hood, and there is no bayonet mount to easily attach one
  • Some slight vignetting and loss of edge resolution at the widest aperture
  • External focus design causes the lens to extend slightly during operation

Verdict

The Hasselblad XCD 4/45P is a highly portable, wide-angle prime lens designed for X-series medium format mirrorless cameras, offering a versatile 36mm full-frame equivalent focal length. Distinguished by its compact build, it weighs only 320g and measures 47mm in length, making it one of the lightest autofocus medium format lenses available. Its optical construction consists of 9 elements in 7 groups, including two aspherical elements to minimize aberrations and ensure edge-to-edge sharpness. Key features include a revised integral leaf shutter providing flash sync up to 1/2000 sec, a 35cm minimum focusing distance with 1:5.2 magnification, and a mechanically coupled focus ring for tactile manual control. Main pros include its exceptional portability, whisper-quiet shutter operation, and sharp image quality at an affordable price point for the system. Notable cons are the relatively modest f/4 maximum aperture, which may require higher ISO in low light, and autofocus speeds that can be slower or more audible compared to high-end full-frame counterparts.
