Third-party reviews

Reviews last updated: July 2026 · How we calculate this

What we like about 7Artisans 75mm F 1 25

  • Exceptional value for money compared to high-end M-mount alternatives
  • Excellent solid, all-metal build quality with smooth mechanical rings
  • Smooth and creamy bokeh with a pleasing 3D subject separation
  • Very high contrast and sharpness when stopped down slightly (f/2.0 and beyond)
  • Includes a focus calibration tool and instructions for rangefinder adjustment
  • Unique 'glow-in-the-dark' radium-filled markings on the Mark II version

What we don't like about 7Artisans 75mm F 1 25

  • Extremely shallow depth of field makes precise manual focusing difficult at f/1.25
  • Softness and low contrast when used wide open at its maximum aperture
  • Significant weight and bulk for a rangefinder lens, often feeling front-heavy on M bodies
  • Prone to chromatic aberration and flare in high-contrast lighting
  • Noticeable focus shift as the aperture is changed
  • Calibration out of the box is often required for accurate rangefinder use

Verdict

The 7Artisans 75mm f/1.25 is a manual focus, full-frame portrait prime lens designed for the Leica M-mount, featuring a Sonnar optical formula with 7 elements in 6 groups, a 62mm filter thread, and a minimum focusing distance of 0.8 meters. Main characteristics include a robust all-metal build with brass components, a 12 or 13-blade rounded diaphragm, a 33-degree angle of view, and a clicked aperture ring. Its primary pros are an exceptionally fast f/1.25 maximum aperture ideal for extreme low-light photography, a razor-thin depth of field that yields a smooth, compressed background bokeh, and high cost-effectiveness as an alternative to premium portrait lenses. However, its notable cons include a heavy weight of around 600 grams, a lack of weather sealing, a razor-thin focus plane that makes critical manual focusing highly difficult on rangefinders without focus assist tools, noticeable focus shift, and a susceptibility to veiling flare and chromatic aberrations when shot wide open.
