What we like about Intel Core i7 6800K

  • Excellent multi-threaded performance for video editing, 3D modeling, and streaming due to 6 cores and 12 threads.
  • Support for quad-channel DDR4 memory provides significantly higher bandwidth compared to mainstream platforms.
  • More affordable entry point into the enthusiast X99 platform than its higher-core siblings.
  • Includes 28 PCIe lanes, offering better support for multiple GPUs and PCIe SSDs than standard 16-lane desktop CPUs.
  • Future-proof for modern games that are beginning to utilize more than four cores effectively.

What we don't like about Intel Core i7 6800K

  • Higher power consumption (140W TDP) compared to mainstream processors like the i7-6700K.
  • Requires more expensive X99 motherboards and robust cooling solutions, especially when overclocking.
  • Lower single-core performance and clock speeds make it slightly slower for gaming compared to high-end mainstream i7s.
  • Limited overclocking headroom compared to the previous Haswell-E generation.
  • Reduced number of PCIe lanes (28) compared to the higher-tier 6850K and 6900K which offer 40 lanes.

Verdict

The Intel Core i7-6800K is a high-end Broadwell-E desktop processor featuring 6 cores and 12 threads with a 3.4 GHz base clock and a 3.8 GHz Turbo Boost Max 3.0 frequency. Built on a 14nm process for the LGA 2011-v3 socket, it includes 15 MB of L3 cache, supports quad-channel DDR4-2400 memory, and provides 28 PCIe 3.0 lanes. Its main pros include strong multi-threaded performance for video editing and 3D rendering, an unlocked multiplier for enthusiast overclocking, and support for high-capacity 128 GB memory configurations. However, it carries a high 140W TDP that requires substantial cooling, lacks integrated graphics, and offers fewer PCIe lanes compared to higher-tier chips in the same family.
